India’s botanical traditions studied the character of flowers, leaves, resins and oils. Within Ayurveda they were chosen not for what each offered alone, but for the relationship between them.

The Composition

ZANAR carries this philosophy into the present.

Seven botanical expressions. One considered composition for rest.

Not a historical formula. An original composition: whole where gradual release matters, distilled where reach is required.

Each ingredient is tested on its own before it enters the blend.

Tulsi

Ocimum tenuiflorum

The sacred basil of the Indian courtyard.

Tradition

Grown at the centre of Indian courtyards for centuries, tended daily and treated as a presence rather than a crop.

In the composition

Green, warm and faintly peppered, tulsi opens the ritual with something immediately recognisable to an Indian evening.

Constituents

Eugenol and β-caryophyllene dominate the volatile fraction. Eugenol gives the leaf its warm, faintly clove-like edge.

Rose

Rosa damascena

The flower that taught India fragrance.

Tradition

The flower Indian perfumery is built around. Kannauj still works copper stills through the short rose season.

In the composition

Soft without becoming sweet, rose enters after the first green notes and holds the centre. Familiar, composed, never decorative.

Constituents

Citronellol, geraniol and nerol carry most of the scent, alongside phenylethyl alcohol, the note the nose reads as rose water rather than rose oil.

One of the few here examined specifically against sleep quality in randomised trials.

Lavender Buds

Lavandula angustifolia

The flower in its whole form.

Tradition

Not native to India, but grown in the Himalayan foothills for decades. The hill harvest is now a small Indian industry.

In the composition

Herbaceous and measured. The bud releases far more slowly than the oil, which is why both are present.

Constituents

Linalool and linalyl acetate account for most of the volatile oil, with 1,8-cineole and camphor in smaller amounts.

In the literature

The largest body of clinical work of anything in the pod, and the most uneven. The House lists the sceptical review alongside the favourable one.

Chamomile

Matricaria chamomilla

The gentlest flower in the composition.

Tradition

Grown across northern India, long familiar in the evening tisane.

In the composition

Soft, rounded and faintly apple-like. It smooths the meeting between the brighter botanicals and the deeper ones.

Constituents

α-Bisabolol and chamazulene make the aromatic character. Apigenin, which most of the sleep literature concerns, is not volatile and does not travel in vapour.

In the literature

Almost all the sleep research is chamomile taken by mouth, a different route from this one. The House notes the difference rather than glossing it.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Boswellia serrata

Resin, carried into essence.

Tradition

Indian frankincense, salai, is tapped in the dry forests of central India and burned as dhoop in temples and houses.

In the composition

Deep and dry, distilled here rather than burned. The lowest note, a weight that stays as the water cools.

Constituents

Largely monoterpene: α-pinene, α-thujene and limonene, with incensole acetate among the diterpenes. The boswellic acids most of the medical literature concerns are resin, and are not carried in the distilled oil.

Incensole acetate acts on TRPV3 channels in the brain. Animal work, offered as enquiry rather than claim.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavandula angustifolia

The flower, distilled.

Tradition

Steam distillation concentrates in minutes what the flower gives over an hour.

In the composition

The oil gives lavender reach, carrying the floral character through the full length of the vapour.

Constituents

The same linalool and linalyl acetate as the bud, concentrated.

In the literature

Linalool vapour was anxiolytic in mice, and the effect vanished without olfactory input. A study in mice, and the House says so.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Citrus sinensis

Warmth at the edge of stillness.

Tradition

India’s orange groves have supplied the fruit and its oil for over a century. Cold-pressed, not distilled.

In the composition

Bright but never sharp, it lifts the opening before yielding. The smallest presence, and the one most noticed by its absence.

Constituents

Limonene makes up the great majority, with myrcene, linalool and the aldehydes that give it brightness.

Tested on people, not only in the laboratory. Two human studies are listed below.
